Brown pelicans are year-round visitors to the Virginia coastal waters but are more visibly seen hanging out around the waters in Virginia in the winter. One specific location is at the Phoebus Waterfront Park in Hampton, Virginia. These last few weeks at Phoebus Waterfront Park has really been happening with the activity of the brown pelicans.
At this location, wildlife photographers and wildlife observers can find the brown pelicans in winter plumage hanging out at the pilings each evening as the pelican roost there in the winter. In the morning during the winter, the sunrise is just to the right of the pilings giving more side lighting during sunrise, and if you time it perfectly with a gorgeous sunrise, you get some wonderful opportunities for silhouette images. There is much better frontal lighting in the late afternoon and evenings.

Last weekend, I paid a visit to the Phoebus Waterfront Park to photograph the pelicans in the evening light and was treated to a very active evening with a lot of the brown pelicans coming in to the pilings to roost. There were opportunities for pelicans in flight, whether it was over the waters of Mill Creek or as the pelicans were coming in for a landing on the pilings.

There were both adults and juveniles that were roosting on the pilings for the evening at Phoebus Waterfront Park. I had a fantastic evening on the docks at the park photographing the incoming pelicans until the sunset. In addition, I also captured some portraits of the pelicans as they were settling in for the night on the pilings.

Hope you enjoy my pelican images from Phoebus Waterfront Park in Hampton, Virginia. Check out my previous blog posts to view my series of 5-images of a brown pelican silhouette head throw.
