Yesterday (March 25, 2021) around 430 pm, I saw a common loon in breeding plumage at Phoebus Waterfront Park in Hampton, Virginia. The loon was first spotted near the Mugler Bridge to Fort Monroe on the side of the park. I was pretty much just getting to the park, so I hurried as much as possible to get down to the floating dock to get some images. However, before I could get there the loon dived, and it was a while before I spotted it again. This next time I spotted the loon, it was just on the other side of the pilings near the shore. I was able to get a couple of images at that time before a pelican had flushed it out of the area. I never saw it come back to the park area in Mill Creek.
This morning I checked eBird and saw that 2 common loons were reported at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia in the afternoon of March 21, 2021. In all my years in this area, I personally have not seen a common loon in breeding plumage in the Hampton Roads area or in the Outer Banks area, but I have seen and photographed common loons in their winter plumage during the winter in both Norfolk and Oregon Inlet in years past.
I was able to get a couple of images of the loon to at least document that we saw the loon in breeding plumage. My images are not the greatest images, and I had to crop them significantly. However, I thought I would share the info and the proof that we saw the common loon in breeding plumage in Hampton, Virginia in case anyone was interested in checking it out.
Here are the 2 loon images that I was able to capture.
Thank you for taking the time to view and read my blog.
All the very best,
